MARK KNOWLES ROOM
CANCER SOCIETY OF THE BAHAMASP.O. Box SS6539, Nassau, Bahamas Telephones: 323-4482 or 323-4441 Fax: 323-4475 www.cancersocietybahamas.orgEmail: cancersociety_coralwave.comHEADQUARTERS: East Terrace, Centreville (2 doors south of ZNS)PRESS RELEASE - December 2006International Tennis Celebrity Mark Knowles was in town recently for his Annual Charity Invitational Tournament as well as to complete an important extension of this charity work by officially unveiling the Room donated in his honour at the Cancer Society of the Bahamas Cancer Caring Centre in Centreville. For the past several years, Mr. Knowles has donated a portion of the funds from his Tournaments to the Cancer Society of the Bahamas and these were earmarked to build and furnish one of the rooms at the new Centre. The Mark Knowles Room will be used primarily by teenagers with Cancer. President of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas, Terry Fountain and Treasurer, Susan Roberts, thanked Mr. Knowles sincerely for his dedicated commitment to the Society and assured him that the Room, which is one of ten built for the use of Family Island Cancer patients needing accommodation while in Nassau for cancer treatment, will be put to very good use. It is with the help of caring and sharing individuals like Mark Knowles that the Cancer Caring Centre will indeed be a home away from home for so many patients, stated Mrs. Roberts. To date we have housed many individuals and this magnificent facility has contributed to making their stay in Nassau so much more comfortable. Mr. Knowles stated that he made the commitment years ago along with his mother, Vicky Knowles, to put the funds raised from his annual tournament to positive use by helping young people in the community and giving back to the Bahamas. This Centre is absolutely wonderful, and I am very pleased that the Mark Knowles Room, located in such serene and beautiful surroundings, is now officially opened. Mr. Knowles was also proud to present the first donation from his recent Tournament to the Cancer Society of the Bahamas following the unveiling.

Bahamas Buzz - Murray's Presence Well-Received at Knowles Annual Charity EventBy: Matt FitzgeraldDecember 6, 2010The 10th annual Mark Knowles Celebrity Tennis Invitational proved to be a hit this weekend, with Scotland's Andy Murray giving the banner-year event the buzz it was looking for.The exhibition, which took place Saturday afternoon at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, was the main attraction of the annual event. Murray, whom opted to fly the same day, had a rough start to his hectic Saturday, as he was awakened for a surprise drug test at six in the morning back in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, event organizers and tennis supporters in the Bahamas were eagerly awaiting his arrival. Last year, top American star Andy Roddick was slated to play but pulled out due to an injury. Despite his early morning and lengthy travel itinerary, Murray arrived without any holdups. His appearance was well-received and he was given a roaring welcome by those in attendance much deserved for his commitment to making it to the event. He enjoyed playing alongside Knowles and starring in front of a group of selected junior players. Murray works in conjunction with a number of charities worldwide and was satisfied to see Knowles' efforts benefiting children."I know he's put a huge amount of work into it over the years, so I'm just pleased that I can help out," said Murray.Knowles was thrilled when Murray arrived and took in every minute of the world's number four ranked player being in The Bahamas."It is amazing to have Andy at the event," Knowles said. "It makes such an impact on the kids and we have some talented juniors here in the Bahamas. They will remember this day for quite some time."While Murray's stint in the Bahamas was brief, he took pleasure playing in front of an audience that doesn't get to see an athlete of his standing live on a regular basis. Murray is the biggest star in recent years to attend since Andre Agassi partook in the event several years ago.The exhibition competition played a World Team tennis format. Team Bahamas consisted of Knowles, Murray, Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Sabine Lisicki, Ryan Sweeting, Jesse Levine and Alex Kuznetsov. Team Paradise Island was represented by Xavier Malisse, Oliver Marach, Bobby Reynolds, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Olga Savchuk, Don Johnson, Amer Delic and Brent Haygarth.Murray teamed with Knowles to win against Marach and Reynolds 5-1. The Scot followed that with an exciting match against Malisse, whom won the fun contest 5-4."I wish I could always play Andy immediately after he gets off a nine hour transatlantic flight!" exclaimed Malisse. The final score declared Team Paradise Island the match winners, edging out Team Bahamas 16 games to 13. The organizers presented gifts of Bahamian art to all the pro participants. This year's event raised roughly $150,000, bringing its 10 year total to over $700.000. Items that were auctioned off as part of generating proceeds included racquets from Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt and Knowles, and two tickets to next years Wimbledon finals."We have had another incredible event," said Knowles. "It makes it really special that our biggest event came in our 10th anniversary!"On Friday, the traditional Pro-Am event served up an opportunity for sponsors to play with the participating professionals. In the end, Malisse and Jeff Everett of Everkey Global defeated Knowles and Miles Nadal, CEO of MDC Partners to win the competition. Sabine Lisicki and Aly Zaver of MDC Partners were winners in the consolation bracket.Vicky Knowles-Andrews, director of the event and mother of Knowles, was pleased with the outcome. Celebrating a milestone year, she knew having Murray's participation would give the event the special effect it was looking for."We have had tremendous support from all of our sponsors over the last decade. They continue to allow us to bring great talent to our shores," stated Knowles-Andrews. "With the addition of our presenting sponsor this year, MDC Partners, we have had our most successful event so far. We continue to grow each year and that allows us to generate more funds for the youth of our nation."Organizers would like to thank everyone involved in helping make this yet another successful event and give their gratitude to all players, sponsors, charities, friends and family, fans, and followers who have supported Marks cause the past ten years.Sponsors for this years event included: Atlantis Resort & Casino, MDC-Partners, Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch Private Bank & Trust; Pictet Bank & Trust Ltd; Serenity Point, Abaco; The Balmoral; The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism; American Airlines; Everkey Global Fund, Mark Holowesko, Odyssey Aviation, The Bahamas Weekly, and The Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture.

11TH ANNUAL MARK KNOWLES CHARITY EVENT RAISES $150,000By: Matt FitzgeraldDecember 8, 2011Former US Open men's champion and world No. 14 Andy Roddick headlined a field of tennis stars at the 11th annual Mark Knowles Celebrity Tennis Invitational that raised $150,000 for local charities this past weekend at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. The event, which entertained a record spectator crowd, has now eclipsed $800,000 in total donations. Roddick was slated to participate in 2009 but was forced to withdraw due to injury. He was excited to make his debut appearance at the event. "It's for a worthy cause, so I'm just glad to be here," the American told The Bahamas Tribune. "There's a bigger cause to how well we play tennis this week. Most of us are in our off season, so it's just fun. I had some in-laws and some friends come down too, so it's been a great getaway for us. We had some fun too." The four day invitational ran from Dec. 1-4, and included a Welcome Cocktail Party hosted by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Atlantis Resort & Casino; a Pro-Am doubles tournament; a Welcome Dinner hosted by Miles Nadal, CEO of MDC Partners; and the marquee showcase, the celebrity tennis exhibition. Operating under the World TeamTennis format, the spectacle featured ATP World Tour professionals Roddick, Amer Delic, Jesse Levine, Xavier Malisse and Nicholas Monroe - WTA players Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Vania King, Olga Savchuk and Yasmin Schnack - and the event co-founder, four-time Grand Slam doubles champion Mark Knowles. A year after bringing fourth-ranked Andy Murray to the event, Knowles was thrilled when Roddick agreed to take part. "It was great to have Andy here. Not only is he one of the best players of his generation but he has established himself as someone who wants to make a difference off the court," said Knowles. "He is incredibly philanthropic and dedicated to improving other people's lives. The Bahamas loved him and looks forward to welcoming him again soon!" Knowles and Roddick have built a friendship in recent years, having teamed up to reach the China Open final in Beijing two years ago. They joined forces again at this year's Mutua Madrid Open and Roddick invited the Bahamian to his September charity event in Austin, Texas. "He's been nice to me from the day I came out as a young kid," said Roddick. "Our friendship has gotten closer over the years and hopefully we can see him out there a little longer." The 40-year-old Knowles is coming off his 20th season on tour and captured his 54th career title with Malisse at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles in July. Malisse, ranked inside the Top 50 of both singles and doubles, was delighted to return. "I am a regular participant as I love coming to the Bahamas," Malisse said. "I enjoy helping Mark out in the off-season as we get along great when we're competing together in doubles." Knowles was recognized at the Welcome Dinner for his contributions; he was singled out as the largest single donor to the Bahamas Special Olympics, and The Sassoon Heart Foundation made special mention of the financial assistance that has helped save the lives of numerous children. "I was surprised to receive the award from Bahamas Special Olympics as being acknowledged as the individual who has contributed the most to them over the years," expressed Knowles. "But I have to thank my peers, as it wouldn't be possible without their support. It is so gratifying that they take the time out to contribute their time to the event. It is not a very hard sell to get them to visit the Bahamas and the great resort of Atlantis Paradise Island though!" Several organizations will benefit from 2011 proceeds. The recipients include The Bahamas Association For The Physically Disabled, Bahamas Environmental Steward Association, Bahamas Special Olympics, Blairwood Academy Disability Scholarships, The Chance Foundation, The Cancer Society For Pediatric Care, The Lyford Cay Foundation, The Sassoon Heart Foundation and The Scout Association Of The Bahamas. Scholarships will also be awarded to promising junior tennis players. The Mark Knowles Management Group would like to thank all involved in making this a celebrated event and give their appreciation to players, sponsors, charities, friends and family, fans, and followers who have supported Knowles' charitable endeavors since its inception in 2001.
